Jim Hickey’s American Politics

Let's Get Real.

League of United Latin American Citizens

LULAC was founded in 1929. It’s purpose is to help Hispanic people attain education, become influential in politics and attain housing. Their goals also include advancing the health, civil rights and economic well-being of Hispanic Americans. In the United States of America, it is one of the oldest, most respected organizations for the plight of Hispanic people.

Members and LULAC councils all around the country establish events in their communities for the health, well-being and financial plights of people in their Hispanic communities. LULAC has a location in Washington DC, which helps it to keep track of the laws that are being made, and to make the plight of Hispanic Americans known to politicians.

Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund

The Lacey and Larkin Fund started as the brainchild of Michael and Jim. They were the co-founders of two left-winged publications– Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. They wrote about the fear mongering against immigrants and Hispanics, corruption and discrimination on the part of Sheriff Arpaio and Maricopa County.

As a result of rubbing those in power the wrong way, they were arrested randomly without probable cause. Fortunately, they were released before the duration of 24 hours, since there was really no suitable reason for why they were arrested. This event sparked a legal battle that ended in a $3.7 million settlement given to them by Maricopa County. After they received the settlement, they started the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund. The Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund is an organization that provides support for other establishments that exist for the purpose of free speech, the rights of immigrants and the protection of the Hispanic community against discrimination.

The Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund particularly focuses on these issues in the state of Arizona, where Michael and Jim reside. Information on their website includes news about their organization, archives about Sheriff Arpaio, articles about Trump and information pertaining to DREAMERs, DACA and DREAMER Act.

Mexican American Legal Defense and Legal Education Fund

MALDEF was founded in 1968. It is a civil rights organization that specifically focuses on the rights of Latinos. MALDEF involves itself in communications, advocacy and community education. The organization also gets involved through litigation when it comes to immigrant rights, political access, education and employment. Read more: Michael Larcey | Twitter

The point of MALDEF is to advocate for Latinos to have a more prominent place in America’s socio-economic and political fabrics. MALDEF is responsible for many significant legal victories that happened in Plyler vs Doe.

The case of Plyler vs Doe happened because a certain law in Texas made it so that school districts had the right to charge undocumented workers fees to send their children to the public schools. In June of 1982, the Supreme Court ruled that such a practice was unlawful, and that states do not have the right to deny free education to children just because of immigration status.

MALDEF’s headquarters is in Los Angeles, though MALDEF has four regional offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC and San Antonio.
