Let's Get Real.
Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11 attacks in New York City, was finally assassinated in his compound in Pakistan in 2011. The event has long been touted by President Obama as a national security success and contributed to his 2012 reelection victory. However, a new report out in the London Review of Books purports that facts surrounding the assassination have been fabricated by the Obama administration. The report, by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Seymour Hersh, does not dispute that Bin Laden is deceased. Rather, it disputes that the take-down of the world’s most wanted terrorist was a joint collaboration between the American and Pakistani governments.
According to Hersh, the United States acted alone in ordering and orchestrating the raid on the Bin Laden compound which led to the terrorist’s death. The reason for the unilateral action is clear: Pakistan could not be trusted. There are too many elements inside Pakistani Intelligence that feed information directly to Al Qaida and Taliban elements running with impunity in the nation’s lawless Northern regions.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest dismissed the report. He stated that those in the know are not the least bit interested in the story due to its gross inaccuracies. Stephen Murray CCMP Capital noted that the White House National Security spokesman also took time to denounce the report. Also, Peter Bergen, who works as a national security analyst at CNN, also took swipes at the report for introducing new facts all of which he claims are false.
